Chapter 13 â Heartcore
As I found the entrance to the pyramid-slash-temple, my spirit guide disappeared once more. I barely hesitated, heading into the dark passage of the structure.
This place smelled like death, and a few yards in, I was wading through bones, and the stones were stained with blood.
A doorway loomed before me, the arch easily twenty feet high, and I entered a dark, massive chamber, far larger than how the building had looked from the outside. A pedestal held a glowing red stone, pulsing sanguine light like a luminous bleeding heart.
The heartcore. It called to me, the symbol of my salvation. My frenzy had almost died away, taking with it my adrenaline-fueled strength and allowing a flicker of pain to pierce through my wall of endurance.
I glanced back, seeing a trail of bloody footsteps left in my wake.
Within a few feet the temple began to rumble.
My weakened state, combined with all my focus upon the stone, had made me ignore my senses. From the shadows stepped a giant.
I knew the creature instantly, Iâd seen his kind back in Kragâhar. It was a fucking fifteen-foot-tall troll.
The troll had that look of the Norwegian giants from the folklore of my own world, mixed with some of those same features present in the orcs of this world, a combination hinting of maybe a distant similar ancestry.
He stared down at me and said, âChicken!â And then licked his lips.
Chicken? Fuck you.
The troll blinked in surprise, and squinted, as though seeing me for the first time. âYou a Cultivator! Beast! Like me!â
The troll spoke almost with childlike intelligence, a simpleness belying his age and size.
I paused, wondering if perhaps Iâd found an ally. Yes, I am.
âBet you taste like chicken,â the troll said, and lunged for me with a massive meaty hand.
I chomped down on a filthy index finger.
The troll jerked his hand back, and cried out, âBitey chicken! Hate bitey chickens.â
Then, the troll shifted. The entire process only lasted a few seconds; his crude clothes shredded as his body became a large lizard. At first, I thought, fuck, heâs becoming a t-rex. But I was wrong. As those few seconds past, I found myself staring up at a fucking dragon, wings and all.
The dragon lowered its head and let loose a scream, a growl, of primal fury. The roar hit me like a sonic wave, and I dug in my claws to keep from falling back.
I roared back, echoing his own fury, but I was no more than a raging toddler screaming at his giant parent.
The troll dragon twisted, and before I could process his attack, his tail slapped me and sent me flying. I twisted, trying to discern up from down, and failed. I smashed through weathered stones, my bones screaming in protest. The strength of this body no match for what I was facing.
When I landed, every bone felt broken, and stars circled my head. I forced myself to my feet, my legs protesting that maybe it would be better to just stay down.
